KINETIK, a DC-based design and communications firm, was thrilled with the opportunity to collaborate with the Corcoran College of Art + Design to create its new Glimpsebook and companion materials. Bringing several years of combined Corcoran experience to the project, the core design team consisted of KINETIK principals Sam Shelton and Jeff Fabian as creative directors and Scott Rier as senior designer. Sam is an adjunct faculty member at the Corcoran in Graphic Design and Scott received is BFA in Graphic Design from the College in 1994. KINETIK designers Joanna Ng and Henrique Sieblesz, BFA in Graphic Design recipients in 2007 and 2008, respectively, also lent their perspectives as Corcoran alumni. The KINETIK team’s personal Corcoran experiences exposed common conceptual threads that were incorporated in all the proposed design solutions: culture, creativity, and community. The suite of materials weaves those concepts together using vivid color, poignant student testimonials, and dynamic photography to tell the inspiring story of life at the College. |

Norotomo Productions Inc. Presents Died Young Stayed Pretty A movie about rock posters Produced and Directed by Eileen Yaghoobian
Died Young, Stayed Pretty is a candid look at the underground indie-rock poster culture in North America. In this unique documentary, director Eileen Yaghoobian examines the creative spirit that drives these controversial graphic artists. Tracing the rock poster industry from the 1960's to present day, Yaghoobian offers an intimate look into this modern subculture, revealing the little known world of rock poster giants such as Art Chantry, Brian Chippendale, the Ames Brothers, Print Mafia, and Rob Jones. These self-proclaimed professional radicals continue to push the envelope, creating posters that are strikingly obscene, unflinchingly blasphemous, and often quite beautiful. Director, Eileen Yaghoobian, introduces the film.

 | The first rule to Project M is not to think about Project M until you're in the middle of it - wearing a bright orange poncho running around an old schoolhouse in the muddy season in Maine while baking 50 pies to give away for free. The second rule is that there are no rules. Project M is a short intensive studio program for young designers and creatives run by John Bielenberg. The main focus is on successfully using creative skills to positively affect contemporary issues in our world. I spent 2 weeks this March in Belfast, ME with a group of 11 other young designers from across the country who came together for this exact reason. Nights in the sparse bunk house, days in the schoolhouse-room studio, evening dinners with visitors, afternoon field trips around Maine.” We familiarized ourselves with John's “Think Wrong” method, which challenges one to arrive at unexpected and thus wildly successful solutions by avoiding typical lines of thought and by approaching a problem from a seemingly random entry point. | |

An Evening with Shepard Fairey and Al Farrow |
|
Written by Antonio Alcala
|
The evening began with a slide show of work and comments by Al Farrow-a sculptor living in the San Francisco area. He currently is working on a series of architectural models of cathedrals, mosques, and temples rendered completely out of gun parts and bullets. He is a non-violent protester who believes organized religion is the source of much violence in the world. Farrow's work is, in his opinion, the best way to have his opinions expressed to the world in a manner where they might have an effect (in contrast to protesting in the street). Visit http://www.alfarrow.com/ Shepard Fairey presented his work next. He noted what he really liked about street art was its accessibility, visibility, and its inherent ability to express passion. He continued by saying street art is for the people and that it creates a dialogue with people. Street art translates defiance more clearly to the public because of the risks involved in bringing that work to the public. |

ANDRE LAMBERTSON: LECTURE AND RECEPTION |
|
Written by Corcoran Faculty and Students
|
|
Photographs by Andre Lambertson are on display in the College Corridor of the Corcoran Gallery of Art from September 3-October 12
Lecture: Wednesday, September 10, 11 a.m. - 12, Corcoran Auditorium
Reception: Thursday, September 11, 6 p.m.- 8 p.m., Gallery 31
Photographs by Andre Lambertson will be on display in the College corridor of the Corcoran Gallery of Art from September 3 through October 12. Mourning Stories from Which We Rise provides a glimpse into the lives of youth at risk. The New York-based photographer pays tribute to two groups of youth whose resilience and courage allowed them to rise above the marginalization they faced within their communities.
Lambertson's photographic journey took him from inner-city America to West Africa. He interviewed children from Harlem, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Lake Providence and New Orleans, Louisiana. He met with Liberian children who were forced to fight against their communities during the country's 15-year civil war. Each story spoke of violence experienced firsthand, but they also revealed spirit and personal reconciliation.
While in Liberia, Lambertson conducted a photography workshop for former child soldiers as part of a project sponsored by everyday gandhis, an organization that works with ex-combatants to help them become future guardians of peace. The Corcoran exhibit will also feature work of these student photographers.
Mourning Stories from Which We Rise captures the connectedness between two worlds. Lambertson speaks of the inner strength and courage of his subjects. His photographs open a window onto "the youth marching into light."
For more information on Andre Lambertson's work in Liberia, please go to http://www.pulitzercenter.org/showproject.cfm?id=40 |
